SUPPORT FOR MIGRANTS IN USING ESSENTIAL SOCIAL SERVICES AND THEIR INTEGRATION INTO THE LABOUR MARKET

NAVI-MIG is born as a programme for the integration of recently arrived immigrants, a successful integration is essential for our common good, our society and our economy. Immigrants can serve as a reactivation for the rural sector or to face the current demographic challenge. They are at high risk of social exclusion, especially in terms of social services, education, access to health care or access to decent housing or employment. Once integrated, they can help improve the functioning of the labour market as well as fiscal stability.

Successful inclusion begins with enabling newly arrived migrants to access essential services and helping them to settle and orient themselves. To do this they need access to the necessary information, which must be inclusive and as accessible as possible, so accessible that they can access it on their mobile phones.

The specific objectives of the NAVI-MIGs project are:

  1. Ensuring movement within the new country autonomously through the application of NAVI-MIGs.
  2. Providing maps to people who have recently arrived (2-3 years) in order to be able to orientate themselves and move around easily through the application of NAVI-MIGs.
  3. Ensure access to basic public services such as integration programmes, language learning, educational programmes, etc.
  4. Reducing existing barriers through the services provided by the NAVI-MIGs application.
  5. Support and facilitate access to programmes at both local and European level through the implementation of NAVI-MIGs.

The international partnership of the project is composed of: Spain, Austria, Finland, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Estonia, Belgium.

DEMO-EC Project

DEMO-EC: Development of sustainable Mobility management in European Cities

GEINNOVA is a collaborator in the DEMO-EC project, which aims to promote the use of low-carbon transport in cities of different countries within the European Union. The objective is to promote behavioural change by reducing the number of cars and promoting the use of public transport, bicycles, or walking.

In order to promote the use of environmentally friendly means of transport and thus reduce CO2 consumption, DEMO-EC seeks to encourage the combination of different environmentally friendly modes of transport such as public transport, cycling but also new mobility solutions. One of the ways to combine these modes is a mobility management approach. The challenge in this respect is that municipal administrations lack instruments and responsibilities are not clear.

Therefore, the main objective of the DEMO-EC project is to integrate mobility management into the development plans of several cities. The project also aims to positively influence policies in the field of low-carbon transport. The aim is to push cities to consider low-carbon alternatives for their mobility but also to promote alternative mobility behaviour.

To achieve these goals, DEMO-EC partners consisting of cities and regional development agencies in Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, and Slovenia are developing 7 different regional action plans. These plans are resulting from the collection and exchange of best practices at local, regional, national, and European level in the fields of behaviour change, governance/participation, car reduction (walking, cycling) and public transport.

LINKS: Development of the Digital Sovereignty Competences of Youth Workers

LINKS is a project that focuses on digital sovereignty for youth workers. Digital sovereignty is a concept that seeks to provide individuals with the ability to own their personal data and control its use. The aim of the project is to enable organisations working with young people and managing personal or sensitive data to:

  1. Improve and strengthen their knowledge of data protection and help them to monitor and evaluate the use of the data they manage.
  2. Support the goal of digital sovereignty in the EU and to offer NGOs and other groups managing personal/sensitive data a way to limit the risks of abuse or cyber-attacks by protecting their data.

The birth of this project stems from several major concerns:

• The majority of data managed by youth workers is of a personal and/or sensitive nature, as they often work with sensitive groups such as migrants, people with disabilities, minors etc. and thus possess personal and sensitive data (e.g. medical data).

• There is a risk of discrimination due to the processing of such data, which can lead to the undermining of the foundations of democracy (Advisory Group on Ethics, 2018).

• The increase of cyber threats is a major concern for institutions, organisations, NGOs etc. that manage sensitive data.

Based on these observations, it follows that it is essential to protect organisations that have to store and manage personal and/or sensitive data. Furthermore, although the EU GDPR has been implemented in the majority of organisations, it appears that many organisations are still having difficulties to protect their data and are not well aware about digital data protection.

Therefore, the LINKS project will directly and actively support youth workers in developing and improving their digital safety skills and competences through the following actions

  1. The development of an online platform that will include innovative training on digital sovereignty and data protection. The aim is also to increase awareness about the importance of data protection.
  2. The development of a digital game that will enable youth workers (and other organisations) to learn how to protect their own (workers’) data and that of the young people they work with.

ePortfolio Migrants: Supporting migrants in acquiring soft skills to develop employability and entrepreneurship

The ePortfolio Migrants learning tool is an online platform that aims to enhance the social inclusion of newly arrived and long-term resident migrants by supporting them in the development of new soft skills. The overall aim of this project is to foster their social inclusion and to enable them to become more integrated in the labour market.

These objectives have been identified as necessary since observations at the European Union level shows that:

• More than 40% of migrants have jobs that are below their qualification level.

• Migrants have a lower employment rate than nationals

• Migrants have less access to adult education.

That is why, ePortfolio Migrants aims to create a comprehensive application that provides an interactive and flexible soft skills programme for migrants, as well as self-assessment tools to identify areas for improvement and monitor progress. They will have access to a set of interactive and adaptable training modules on soft skills and will be able to define a curriculum depending on the profession and soft skills they wish to target. In particular, the platform will allow them to better understand what soft skills are, but also how their knowledge and experience are linked to soft skills and how they can be enhanced and used in a professional environment (job interviews, setting up and running their own business, developing business networks, etc.).

Thus, this project has several specific objectives (non-exhaustive list):

  1. To provide adult learning opportunities for migrants.
  2. To increase the soft skills of migrants and thus contribute to labour market integration and entrepreneurship development.
  3. Increase the autonomy and self-sufficiency of migrants to navigate life in the labour market environment.
  4. Enhance social, economic, and cultural inclusion.
  5. Support local authorities, NGOs, job centres and employment agencies in developing and assessing immigrants’ soft skills: support local authorities, NGOs, job centres and employment agencies in matching labour demand and supply.
  6. Provide trainers and mentors with the opportunity to transfer and adapt the skills and teaching techniques learned to other contexts and other vulnerable citizens, thus further increasing the opportunities and quality of adult learning in the community.

INTEGRATION THROUGH PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

Recognition of prior knowledge (RPL) is a process used to identify, assess and certify a person’s knowledge, skills and competencies – regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred – against prescribed standards for a part (modular) or full qualification (NSW DET, 2009; MQA, 2009; VETA, 2014). In most EU countries there are provisions to smooth refugee children’s entry into mainstream education through special language courses, different types of immersion classes and additional support. Teachers should be able to meet the diverse needs of all students and foster tolerance, respect for diversity and civic responsibility. Whereas most European countries already faced challenges in matching teaching methods and quality with the needs of diverse classrooms, the challenges intensified with the arrival of large numbers of refugee students and their particular needs. According to the OECD (2014, in: Public Policy Management Institute, 2017, p.12) working with multicultural and multilingual students is one of the areas that teachers feel the least prepared for.

The specific objectives of the IntegPri project are:

  1. Strengthen the teaching profession by providing methodology and tools to help teachers assess their refugee/migrant students’ prior knowledge
  2. Promote intercultural education and intercultural dialogue
  3. Enrich teachers’ existing knowledge on differentiation teaching
  4. Promote an inclusive, encouraging, supportive and non-discriminative learning environment
  5. Encourage lifelong learning and professional development
  6. Improving efficiency and flexibility in education systems by allowing alternative learning pathways
  7. Promoting social inclusion and equity for disadvantaged groups

BUSINESS ORIENTED YOUNG WOMEN: HOW TO SUPPORT AND EMPOWER THEIR ENTREPRENEURIAL COMPETENCES

The project EMPOWER is conceived as a tool to promote and reboot young women entrepreneurship against unemployment, entry barriers of the sector through the digital training of people in entrepreneurial skills and exchange of good practices, facilitating the learning of business management contents specifically adapted to the needs of the target group advancing and promoting competitiveness, economic diversification, the sustainable development and job creation. Women are the most affected from the Covid-19 pandemic, that have been hit in several aspects of life, included their participation in the labour market.

The specific objectives of the EMPOWER project are:

-To provide employment guidance systems to young women who want to undertake and lead social enterprises or to take up the entrepreneurship world through the production of high-quality materials and tailor-made training with new methods and more effective and individualized tools to support young women;

-To give young women access to relevant networks through the involvement of stakeholders, organizations active in the field and other policymakers at the most appropriate level. Networks are key factors in business success by providing access to information, advice, finance and business contacts;

-To support the priority of advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment (as a key project strategy) through the creation of a business model based on social enterprise with an active role for young women leaders. Therefore, through the implementation of this project we want to reduce the gender disparity between men and women with access to training in order to improve young women self-esteem and confidence;

-To offer to young women the motivation to start a business (alone or with others) an all-in-one program (online contents and tools, workshops, group activities, multi-mentor support) in enlarging their knowledge of entrepreneurship, sustainable management, improve attitudes and foster skills needed to initiate and manage an enterprise, despite the lack of women role models. Participants would become their own entrepreneurial model;
